Is artificial grass flammable? The short answer is no!
Safety is a crucial factor for many people when deciding if the artificial grass is right for them or not. Is artificial grass flammable, fire resistant or fire retardant? The short answer is yes – mostly! Quality artificial grass has fire resistant properties.
Good quality artificial grass goes through strict fire risk testing and must also follow stringent EU regulations, making it an ideal solution for use in the garden, in the home or at events. Clearly, it goes without saying, that anything that’s a fire hazard should be avoided at all costs.
Does artificial grass melt when exposed to flames?
Artificial grass is non-toxic and flame retardant and is made of a high-quality synthetic material that does not burn but will melt if it comes into contact with things like BBQ’s, fire bowl, fireworks etc. Therefore it’s vital hot objects are kept away from artificial lawns to prevent it from melting. To be on the safe side, you need to ensure your BBQ is raised above the grass and ideally placed on slabs, particularly if you are using disposable ones.
Discarded cigarettes will not spread or turn into a fire but they are likely to leave a burn mark where it is dropped. Fortunately, if one or more sections of your artificial lawn have melted it can be repaired. If there is extensive damage though, it may be necessary to replace your entire lawn.
What can be done to prevent artificial grass from melting?
Filling the artificial grass with in-fill sand will not only keep the lawn looking good, but it will act as a type of extinguisher making it more fireproof. Only artificial grass with sand infill is tested to be fireproof. Remember the best way to avoid damaging your lawn is prevention. It’s important that anything that could damage your turf is addressed before it’s laid. Sometimes even windows polished gutters, mirrors and reflective panels can cause the artificial lawn to melt due to the sunlight reflecting from those surfaces.
How can artificial grass be fixed if it’s been damaged by fire?
If your grass has been damaged by things like BBQ’s or fireworks, remember it can be repaired. The burnt section can be replaced with a new bit of fake grass. However, unfortunately, it’s not guaranteed it’ll look exactly the same. Fake grass comes in batches. So even though you’re using the same grass, depending on when the installation was carried out, it may not look identical. Also, like any patched-in sections, it may be visible at first. It should become less so over time.
