Artificial Grass for Dogs & Pets

Artificial Grass for Dogs & Pets

Many consider artificial grass as a low maintenance alternative to grass, and something that looks great all year round. Artificial lawns are great for both dogs and other pets and have many benefits! All our artificial grass lawns are pet-friendly and pet safe, however, we now have our specially designed;  Artificial Grass for Dogs Paws Artificial grass.
To see the full selection, you can view our artificial grass range.

Artificial grass can come with two types of backings, which is either the old common favourite, Latex, or the newfound PU (Polyurethane). The backing of the artificial grass which will be black in colour is the part we are now talking about, this is the part that keeps the strands of grass fixed in place.

What is latex?

Natural latex is a milky white liquid that is extracted from the Hevea-Brasilienis Tree, better known as the Rubber Tree. Rubber Trees are native to South America and were spread around the world in the early 19th century because of their great value. Rubber Trees are tapped through a method that is very similar to maple trees being tapped for their maple syrup.

What is synthetic latex?
Synthetic latex is a synthetically produced compound that mimics the properties of natural latex. Rather than being harvested from rubber tress it is produced from petrochemicals. Several types of synthetic latex exist but SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) is the most common type of synthetic latex used in the production of synthetic latex foam.

What is Polyurethane?
Polyurethane was developed during the second world war (1939-1945). It was initially developed in order to replace rubber and was extremely difficult and expensive to obtain. Today it is used as a coating for various objects such as footwear, fridge freezers, wooden furniture and as well as gaskets for cars. Polyurethanes are polymers and best thought of, as chain of three-dimensional structures made up of long, repeating smaller units called monomers. Other well-known polymers include polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, nylon & silicon.

How Can I Tell The Difference Between Latex Or PU Backed Artificial Grass?

A Latex grass backing will have a black Matt look, unlike a PU backed Artificial Grass which will have a highly gloss looking backing.

Why Use PU Backed or Latex Backed Artificial Grass With Pets?

It may sound silly, but research proves that dogs/pets can be allergic to latex as well as us humans. The latex can affect dogs by causing a skin reaction such as redness, dry/scaly skin and hair loss. Constant scratching, chewing and licking can be a behaviour shown.

Dog/Pet urine is a big contributing factor when it comes to people choosing artificial grass. One of our most frequently asked questions is “Does pet urine stain or damage the artificial grass?”. The answer is no! It doesn’t stain, damage or burn the artificial grass whether it is PU backed or latex backed.
However, using a latex backed grass can cause an awful odour after the artificial grass has been installed for some time and if it has not been cleaned properly. If the latex backed artificial grass is not cleaned and washed through regularly this can cause the urine to crystallise and this can give you the bad smelling garden.

PU backed artificial grass doesn’t absorb moisture, liquids and therefore, urine. This is handy for dog owners as it greatly reduces the hygiene and odour issue associated with dogs. However, we do still advise you wash the area through regularly with water or our artificial grass cleaner or if needed use a diluted disinfectant for hygiene reasons.

Unlike latex backed artificial grass, PU backed artificial grass is very weather resistant and corrosion resistant. Latex backed artificial grass can expand and contract in extreme temperature variations, which may result in your garden having air bubbles and wrinkles during very hot days. Don’t panic, this will contract when the weather starts to get colder leaving you with your normal artificial lawn.

Studies from our manufacturers show that PU backed artificial grass is very temperature stable and doesn’t expand in heat. Unfortunately PU backing it is more expensive to produce than Latex, which also explains why Latex backed products are cheaper.

Dog on Artificial Grass

Artificial grass and dogs – why choose it?

Maintaining your garden can take up a lot of time and effort, especially if you have a dog or other pets at home. Dogs can often dig up real grass, make a lot of mess that needs picking up and they can traipse mud in and spread it all around the home – particularly in wetter months!

Synthetic grass is strong and durable, making it impossible for dogs to dig through, resulting in a pretty lawn regardless of how much digging effort your dog may take! Artificial grass also thankfully means the end of harmful chemicals that can be poisonous to animals. Our artificial grass is also 100% non-toxic and safe for animals to roam around freely without risk of getting poorly from toxins, diseases or illnesses that can be picked up.

Artificial grass is also a great option for dog kennels due to its low maintenance values. By reducing maintenance hours, this allows kennel staff to have more time to spend looking after the animals rather than taking care of maintenance in the garden – or reduces cost by not needing to employ a gardener.

Summary points:

  • Easy to clean
  • Perfect grass all year around
  • No muddy paw prints
  • No need for weed killer and risk poisoning pets
  • Reduced risk of lungworm
  • No worn out and dead grass
  • Pet-friendly
  • Non-toxic
  • Pets love it
  • Usable all year

Natural or artificial grass?

Natural grass requires a lot of maintenance especially throughout the summer months when grass grows at a faster rate due to the sun exposure. And throughout the winter it is easy for dogs to bring in wet mud and walk it all around the house making a mess along the way – whilst this may be fun for the dog, it can be tiresome for the owner. On top of this, a real lawn can actually be more of a danger to animals due to picking up unwanted bugs such as ticks and fleas and also being prone to poisonous substances such as licking weed killer off of grass and plants. More often than not, homeowners that are lucky enough to have a garden can spend a fortune on lawn maintenance products to keep your lawn looking nice, only to be left frustrated at the results – all of which can be highly toxic to dogs and pets.

Artificial grass, however, requires little or no maintenance allowing you and your pets more time to enjoy your garden. Once the artificial lawn has been laid it is safe for pets to use freely throughout the year with peace of mind for the owner that they are safe and won’t be bringing any mud or picking up any nasty bugs or toxins.

Cleaning Dog Turf

One thing a lot of pet owners are worried about is, how to clean artificial grass after their dogs and pets have done their business on it. All of our synthetic lawns are permeable so all dog mess can be cleaned and picked up easily. Rain will help to clean your fake grass but you can also do this manually with a hose, disinfectant or an artificial grass cleaner.

Or now, you can try one of our electric powered artificial grass brush range. Not only do these help with the maintenance of your lawn, they re-vitalise the grass fibres and makes it look like new too!

Pet urine can cause a lot of damage to real grass due to its high PH level. This can often leave patchy discoloured grass throughout your garden that can be hard to bring back to life. However, artificial grass will not be damaged by the PH level of urine. This is where artificial grass can be a real benefit to pet owners. Not only will your garden maintenance be reduced, but your costs of endless products to bring colour back to your lawn will also be eliminated. Urine and other waste are easy to spot and straightforward to clean. Rainwater washes away the urine and any muck left behind from other animal waste. If there is a drought particularly during warmer summer months, simply wash away with water or use your hosepipe.

Does urine affect artificial grass or cause any discolouring?

The plastic fibres of artificial grass do not discolour therefore you are guaranteed an inviting vivid green garden all year round, unlike real grass. There are drainage holes in our artificial grass that allow for urine to drain away quickly and easily without damaging your lawn.
